Scientific name: Ateles hybridus
Family: Atelidae
Genus: Ateles
Distribution/habitat : the brown spider monkey, Ateles hybridus, is a critically endangered primate species endemic to the humid tropical forests of northern Colombia and Venezuela. It primarily inhabits primary forests, characterized by a continuous canopy, abundant fruiting trees, and low underbrush density. These habitats provide essential cover and food richness for its survival.
Diet: its diet is predominantly frugivorous, consisting of over 80% ripe, fleshy fruits, which it gathers from the treetops. It also consumes leaves, flowers, seeds, and occasionally insects. This dietary specialization makes it particularly vulnerable to deforestation and habitat fragmentation, as it relies on a diverse array of fruit-bearing trees for sustenance.
Weight: 4 – 9 kg
Length: 45–60 cm body length, 60–80 cm prehensile tail
Lifespan: 20–27 years in the wild
Conservation status: Critically Endangered
