Distribution/habitat : Eurasia and North America. Native to Asia, it colonized Europe around 250,000 years ago. It is found in the forests and mountains of northern Europe, in the south from Scandinavia to Spain, and from France in the west to Romania in the east.
Diet: opportunistic omnivore, predominantly vegetarian. Its diet consists of 75-80% plant foods (berries, dried and fleshy fruits, herbaceous plants, tubers) and 20-25% animal foods (wild or domestic ungulates, small mammals, amphibians, insects and other invertebrates).
Weight: 70 to 240 kg
Height: 1,70 to 2,50m standing; 0,90 to 1,20 m at the withers; tail length 10 cm approximately.
Lifespan: 25 to 30 years
Conservation status: Critically Endangered in France, of minor concern (IUCN) worldwide.
Individuals: 52 in the French Pyrenees (2019); 15,000 in Europe (2008).
Demographic trend: very fragile in France. Slightly increasing in the Pyrenees since 2019.
