Distribution/habitat : present, depending on the season, in all oceans and seas of both hemispheres (including Antarctic waters) except the Mediterranean, the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. It lives in deep waters, but can sometimes move closer to the coast when the water is warm.
Diet: carnivorous. It feeds on many small prey such as krill (plankton), herring, pollock, haddock, mackerel, capelin, salmon and various other fish.
