How do you measure your pet?

How to measure your pet correctly for a well-fitted accessory?

Providing your four-legged friend with a perfectly fitting pet accessory is essential to guaranteeing his safety, comfort and style.

Whether it’s a collar, harness or cushion, accurate measurements are key. Here’s a step-by-step guide to measuring your cat or dog correctly.

What you need before measuring your cat or dog

Before you start, make sure you have the following items:

A flexible tape measure (like those used in sewing)

A treat or toy to keep your pet calm and still

Paper and pen to record measurements

Make sure your pet is in a natural, comfortable position before you start. We advise you to take the measurements at your pet’s quietest time of day.

Measure your pet’s neck size for a perfectly fitting collar

To choose a perfectly fitting MAURICE collar:

Measure your dog‘s or cat‘s neck size: to do this, wrap the tape measure around the neck where the collar will be worn.

Tip: leave a gap of about two fingers between the neck and the tape to ensure that the collar is neither too tight nor too loose.

Measurements to consider when choosing a harness size

The harness must be both secure and comfortable. The key measurements are :

  • Chest circumference: measure the widest part of the rib cage, just behind the front legs.
  • Neck circumference: as for the collar, measure the base of the neck.
  • Dorsal length: from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.

The right measurements for the right cushion size and a good night’s sleep

To ensure your pet enjoys a restful night’s sleep, it’s also very important to take the right measurements:

  • Body length: measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail.
  • Body width: measure the distance between the shoulders when the animal is lying down.
  • Tip: add 10 to 20 cm to each measurement for extra space and optimum comfort.

A few practical tips

  • Be patient: if your pet moves a lot, take breaks and turn it into a game.
  • Make a note of all measurements: create a personal file to avoid having to start from scratch every time you make a purchase.
  • See our online MAURICE size guide for details of the different sizes available.
